If you’re anything like me, the heat of the summer is the best time of the year. Bundling up in layers for the winter is a distant memory, and you have the opportunity to enjoy being outdoors most of the time.
What if even the summer heat isn’t enough to chase away the wintry feeling in your body, though?
For some of us, feeling cold is an all day, everyday affair. Not only is it frustrating, but it can be quite concerning as well. Getting to the bottom of the issue requires heeding your body as well as your health habits.
Here are eight of the potential root causes you should investigate.
1. You Aren’t Drinking Enough Water
I know, I know — we’re always talking about how important proper hydration is. However, it really is true! Dehydration can make you feel chilly, and in some cases can even trigger feverish chills.
Put that soda can down and reach for the water bottle instead. You should be drinking plenty of clear fluids like water throughout the day to keep your body in good working order and receive many of the benefits that drinking water brings.
Getting back to a normal temperature could just take a few days of consistent water intake.
2. It May Indicate a Thyroid Issue
Hypothyroidism, which is when your thyroid gland doesn’t pump out enough of its particular hormones, afflicts millions of people around the world.
Are you one of them? You might not know it yet, but being chilly even when it’s hot out could be a warning sign.
Your thyroid helps to regulate your metabolism, and as we’ve already discussed, that contributes to your internal temperature. If other remedies aren’t helping, a chat with your physician about your thyroid may be in order.
3. Your Body is Iron Deficient
When it comes to thinking about vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients we need, iron is usually not at the top of our list.

Do your cold feelings tend to concentrate in your extremities, particularly your feet or your fingertips? This could be a sign that your blood is not circulating sufficiently to those parts of your body.
Without the right amount of oxygen and blood reaching the far points of your body, you’ll quickly begin to feel cold. Hypertension, heart disease, and other medical maladies can be the source of this feeling.

6. Diabetes Could be the Cause Lurking Beneath Your Icy Extremities

7. Suffering from Insomnia? That Can Make You Feel Cold, Too
There have been in-depth studies which show that sleep deprivation disrupts the body’s ability to regulate its temperature properly.
I know I hate tossing and turning all night, but what if it’s a regular occurrence? Your brain might not be providing the correct signals to help you feel warm when you should.
Learning how to sleep better or uncovering the root causes of your insomnia can help. Once you’re getting regular sleep again, you may find those cold feelings disappear.
8. Your Vitamin Levels are Insufficient for Proper Temperature Regulation
Much like iron, there are other vitamins and minerals, such as B-12 and niacin, which help to regulate your body’s temperature.
Being deficient in these crucial nutrients can eventually lead to an iron deficiency as well.
In other words, it’s a vicious cycle. You might want to try taking an appropriate multivitamin to ensure your body has everything it needs to stay warm.
Whether you just need to boost your iron levels or drink more water, there are plenty of ways you can work on your body to avoid the sensation of always feeling cold.
